Module Description:This module introduces the learner to the science of the grass plant as used in turfgrass in Ireland. The fundamental concepts of turfgrass establishment and maintenance will be covered, so that the successful student will have a firm basis to proceed to more advanced and use-specific turfgrass maintenance.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to
  1. Have a working knowledge of the range of grass genera and species used for turfgrass in Ireland
  2. Describe the morphology and growth cycle of the grass plant.
  3. Recognise the requirement for and the analysis behind schedules for turfgrass maintenance
  4. Prepare seedbed for turfgrass growth and establishment
  5. Analyse the nutrient requirement for an existing turfgrass area.

Module Content & Assessment

Indicative Content
Turfgrass Fundamentals
The morphological features of the grass plant. The growth and development of grass. The turfgrass environment.. The four main grass genera used in turfgrass in Ireland and their identification. . Turfgrass nutrient requirements. Light and water requirements.
Establishment and Development of Turfgrass
The preparation of seedbeds, sowing and sodding. Drainage and irrigation requirements for turfgrass. Fertiliser application on turfgrass. The basic principles of turfgrass construction. The use of sand for turfgrass construction and maintenance. Introduction to pests and diseases on turfgrass.
Turfgrass Maintenance
Cultural practices, Mowing specifications, Thatch relief and control. Aeration. Relief of compaction. Topdressing.
Sportsturf Sands
Particle size analysis. Distribution curves. Blinding layers. pH. Lime content.
Turfgrass Fertilisers
Organic. Soluble. Slow release. Iron.
