Module Description:This module will introduce the learner to the concept of self-employment and examine the establishment of a new business, from initial idea through feasibility and market analysis to the legal obligations of the new business owner.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to
  1. Understand the process of business start-up and have attained the necessary practical skills to initiate a business start-up in the Horticulture industry or any other industry
  2. Appreciate the importance of business planning and produce a business plan
  3. Carry out market research and assess the viability of the business idea
  4. Identify sources of capital and know the basics of financial management of a small business
  5. Define the statutory/legal obligations of the self-employed person or owner of a small business

Entrepreneurship and Self Employment
Qualities of an entrepreneur/self-employed person; The small business environment in Ireland
Law and the small business
The legal framework for self-employment and small business in Ireland; the requirements to register with Revenue, Companies Registration Office, etc.; record-keeping obligations
Business idea generation and evaluation
Examining a range of business ideas; choosing an idea to develop; evaluating the market potential; examining the resources required to establish the business - capital, labour, premises, machinery, materials, etc.
Business planning
Researching and preparing a business plan
Forecasting capital demands, cashflow planning, accessing various sources of capital, maintaining financial records
